The Unsung Heroes of Education: A Conversation with Tom Pesce

When we think about education, it’s easy to focus on students and full-time teachers. But working hard to help the continuity of education are dedicated substitute teachers who ensure learning never skips a beat — often without much recognition. These passionate individuals are committed to making a difference, often in ways that extend beyond the traditional classroom.

As the keynote speaker for the 2025 Substitute Management Symposium, Tom Pesce, a sixth-grade English Language Arts teacher and professional magician, embodies this spirit. In a recent conversation with Dani O’Shaughnessey, CEO of Red Rover, Pesce shared his journey in K-12 education, the pivotal role of substitute teachers, and what attendees can expect from his upcoming keynote, Own Your Magic: Discovering the Greatness Within.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Tom Pesce’s journey in education began in the classroom as a substitute, where he quickly found his passion for teaching. He teaches at a Blue Ribbon school in Westchester County, New York, and holds multiple graduate degrees in elementary education, school district administration, and advanced leadership studies. His inspiration? Watching his parents thrive in education. His father was an elementary school principal and his mother still educates students today as a music teacher.

“Teaching has always been my calling,” Pesce shared. “But it was the relationships I built with students, parents, and colleagues that inspired me to explore ways to impact education beyond the classroom.”

This mission has led Pesce to blend his passion for teaching with his talent as a keynote speaker. He travels around the U.S. sharing his knowledge and delivering keynotes that empower educators to “own their magic” and rediscover their purpose.

Substitute Teachers: The Backbone of Continuity

Pesce is quick to highlight the indispensable role of substitute teachers in the education ecosystem. He believes that substitute teachers are the heroes of the education system.

“They provide continuity, ensuring that learning progresses in the absence of regular teachers,” said Pesce. “Beyond maintaining classroom stability, substitutes often bring fresh perspectives and unique experiences that enrich the learning environment.”

Pesce views substitutes as bridges who are not merely filling gaps but fostering resilience and adaptability among students. Substitutes also model how change can be an opportunity for growth, turning potential disruptions into moments of inspiration.

“Their ability to adapt quickly and connect with students on quick notice is nothing short of remarkable,” he said.

Leaving Lasting Impressions

Reflecting on the impact substitutes can have, Pesce shared the story of Jason, a previous student. A substitute teacher formed a unique connection with Jason, helping him gain confidence. Eventually, Jason overcame his fear of speaking and read a story aloud to his class, specifically requesting the substitute teacher’s presence.

“Substitutes often think they’re just there to ‘hold down the fort,’ but their impact can extend far beyond the classroom,” Pesce noted.

What to Expect at the 2025 Substitute Management Symposium

Having begun his education career as a substitute teacher himself, Pesce understands the challenges and opportunities the role entails. It requires a unique mix of preparation and flexibility. Establishing trust quickly with students is both the greatest challenge and the most rewarding opportunity.

Pesce’s keynote address, Own Your Magic: Discovering the Greatness Within, promises to be a high-energy celebration of substitute teachers’ vital role in education. Attendees will gain actionable strategies for building instant rapport, maintaining classroom culture, and turning challenges into opportunities.

“I want attendees to leave inspired and empowered to see themselves not as ‘fill-ins,’ but as integral players in shaping the future of education,” Pesce said. “Together, we’ll explore how to leave a lasting impact on schools, students, and communities — one classroom at a time.”
